Kiev. The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has reached a turning point. On one hand, high level meetings are being held at the international level to restore peace, while on the other hand, destruction is raining from the sky on the land of Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed that Russia has targeted his country’s energy infrastructure with more than 400 messengers of death (drones and missiles) in the last 24 hours amid ongoing discussions on peace agreements. Zelensky alleges that Russia wants to force Ukraine to kneel by using the severe cold as a weapon.
According to the Ukrainian President, Russia has hit the country’s power grid and electricity distribution centers in the largest ever airstrike. More than 400 suicide drones and 40 deadly missiles were used in this attack. This attack by Moscow has caused huge devastation in major areas like Volyn, Lviv, Rivne and Vinnytsia. In Rivne, a residential building was also targeted, causing panic among the common citizens. Zelensky, sharing photos of damaged power stations on social media, said that Moscow has chosen the path of destruction instead of diplomacy and now the world will have to take away from Moscow the power to weaponize cold.
Amidst this fierce tension, a big diplomatic news has come that America’s newly elected President Donald Trump has set a deadline of June 2026 to end this war. The goal of the Trump administration is to reach a concrete agreement between the two sides before this. Recently, a US-brokered trilateral meeting was held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on 4 and 5 February. Although no final agreement could be reached on territorial disputes and a ceasefire, a major breakthrough was achieved on humanitarian grounds. After a gap of nearly five months, the two sides have exchanged 314 prisoners (157 from each side). Despite these efforts for peace, the situation on the ground remains complicated. Russia is still adamant on the demand for complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donbass region, which Kiev has clearly rejected. Now everyone’s eyes are on the trilateral talks to be held in Miami, America after the next four months. America will host a meeting of this level on its soil for the first time. This meeting will decide whether the June 2026 deadline will become a reality or whether this devastating war will enter its fifth year. At present, Ukrainian citizens are forced to live in fear of the next airstrike amid darkness and bitter cold.
