Legal dispute regarding Basmati

Efforts to get GI tag for Basmati rice of Madhya Pradesh have been going on since 2008. GI Registry Chennai had earlier not included Madhya Pradesh under the ambit of Basmati. Later, the process of revised application started on the objection of the state government. The matter reached the Madras High Court, where the petition was dismissed on 27 February 2020. However, now the Supreme Court has canceled the order of Madras High Court and has cleared the way for further hearing in the case. The state government says that efforts will continue at the legal and administrative level to get GI tag for Basmati, so that farmers can get its benefits.
