Pune. In a major action, CBI laid a trap in Military Engineering Services in Khadki, Pune and caught two senior officers red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to clear the pending bills of a contractor. This action has created a stir in the construction department of the defense sector. The officers have been identified as Sunil Nikam and Suresh Mhaske. The complainant is a power of attorney holder of a private company which fulfills contracts for military engineering services. According to his complaint, he had completed the work on time and had also submitted the completion certificate. But his bills were deliberately stopped. Nikam and Mhaske had demanded a bribe of Rs 6 lakh from him to approve these payments. The complainant approached CBI about this bribe on 3 February. After verifying the complaint, the CBI laid a trap in Khadki on 6 February. After negotiations, the accused agreed to take Rs 2 lakh as the first installment of bribe. Junior engineer Suresh Mhaske was caught accepting bribe money in the office, while assistant garrison engineer Sunil Nikam was also arrested for his involvement in the conspiracy. After the arrest, CBI searched the offices and houses of both the accused. During the search, officials found suspicious cash worth Rs 1.88 lakh as well as important documents. The accused could not give any account of this amount.
