Khandwa Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh was awarded the ‘President’s Water Award’ for water conservation. Now questions are being raised on this. Allegations are being made that the photos which were uploaded on the government portal claiming to be of Khandwa were created by artificial intelligence. President Draupadi Murmu honored
In fact, on 18 November 2025, Khandwa was honored by President Draupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi for its commendable work in the field of water conservation. Best Gram Panchayat Kaveshwar got second position in the entire country. Khandwa stood first in the entire country for ‘Water Harvesting and Public Participation’ initiative under the ‘Catch the Rain’ program of the Government of India. Along with this award, an amount of Rs 2 crore was received. Collector Rishav Gupta and District Panchayat CEO Dr. Nagarjuna Gowda had accepted it, whose pictures were also revealed.
AI photos uploaded on government portal
Before the award ceremony, photographs and other required documents are uploaded on the government portal for nominations to provide details and progress of their work. In this sequence, the photos were uploaded by Khandwa district on Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari (JSJB) program portal and Catch the Rain (CTR) portal. They are AI. The logos of the sites through which these photos were generated are also included.
Jitu Patwari targeted
Congress State President Jitu Patwari has targeted this entire issue. Posting on social media site X, he wrote that while the BJP government should teach our children the good use of AI, it itself is doing corruption with AI. In Khandwa, BJP government officials converted two feet pits into wells with AI in the name of water conservation and uploaded AI generated pictures of various development works in the entire area on the portal.
He further wrote that on the basis of these photographs, an award was also taken from the Honorable President. When the ground reality came to light, there were fields and empty fields. It is clear that this was not water conservation, but a game of pictures made through technology. Corruption also became smart under BJP rule.
Explanation presented by the administration
Clarification in this regard has been presented from the official X account of Khandwa Collector. It was written in the post that unfortunately, prima facie fake news is being spread through some social media accounts regarding the water harvesting works being done by Khandwa district. It is clarified that Khandwa district was awarded the Honorable President’s Award for construction of the maximum (more than 1.25 lakh) water conservation works in the entire country under the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari (JSJB) programme. A separate JSJB portal was available for the JSJB programme. After careful and thorough investigation by the district administration at the block level and district level, only the verified photos were uploaded on the JSJB portal.
Talking about the action taken against those responsible, the post wrote that apart from this, there is another portal called Catch the Rain (CTR), on which generally IEC photos related to water conservation are uploaded only for educational and motivational purposes. It has come to the notice of the district administration that around 20 AI generated photos were uploaded on the CTR portal, possibly with malicious intentions. The district administration is taking action against the people who uploaded these 20 AI generated photos.
