Petrol and diesel prices across the country are updated every morning at 6 am. This change directly impacts the pockets of common consumers because the prices of petrol and diesel affect everything from household budget to transportation expenses. Many factors including crude oil prices in the international market, strength or weakness of the rupee against the dollar and taxes come together to decide the new fuel prices every day. The rates released by government companies this morning are as follows

Petrol diesel prices in major cities

City petrol per liter diesel per liter
Patna Rs 105.58 Rs 93.80
Indore Rs 106.48 Rs 91.88

It is clear from today’s rates that there has been a slight change in fuel prices in many cities of the country. There has been relief in prices in some places, while in some cities the prices have increased slightly. In Delhi, petrol is priced at Rs 94.77 and diesel at Rs 89, which seems stable as compared to the previous days. Whereas in Mumbai petrol remains above Rs 103 and diesel is close to Rs 90. Prices are still the highest in cities like Patna and Indore.

Why do the prices of petrol and diesel change every day?

There are many major reasons behind the daily change in prices of petrol and diesel. The most important among these are.

1. Price of crude oil in the international market

Every fluctuation in the price of crude oil directly impacts petrol diesel in India. If oil becomes expensive in the international market, prices increase here too.

2. Strength or weakness of rupee against dollar

India imports most of the crude oil. The weakness of the rupee against the dollar increases the import cost, making petrol and diesel expensive.

3. Tax and Refinery Charge

Central and state governments impose tax on petrol and diesel. Due to these taxes, the prices of petrol and diesel differ in different states.

4. Transportation and Dealer Margin

The cost of transporting fuel from the refinery to the petrol pump is also included in the prices.
