Bharatpur: Helplessness of a father, negligence of the system and system avoiding responsibilities. This story, spread from Bharatpur to Jaipur, is not only about the death of a newborn, but also about serious questions arising on the health care system. A newborn baby, who was referred from Bharatpur’s Zanana Hospital to Jaipur’s JK Lone Hospital, died on the way. The father alleges that the oxygen cylinders installed in the ambulance got exhausted on the way, no alternative arrangements were made on time and the child died due to lack of oxygen. After this tragic incident, the father kept making rounds of hospitals and police stations with the child’s body, but he did not get immediate hearing from anywhere.
Mukesh Kumar, father of the deceased newborn, resident of Sikandra police station Bayana, told that his son was born a day earlier in Janana Hospital of Bharatpur. After birth the child was having trouble breathing. The child was kept on oxygen under the supervision of doctors. At around 6 pm on Saturday evening, doctors described the child’s condition as serious and referred him to JK Lone Hospital in Jaipur. After this the newborn was being taken to Jaipur through a government ambulance.
The father says that an oxygen cylinder was installed in the ambulance, but no drip was given to the child. On the way, suddenly the oxygen cylinder ran out of gas near Bassi. After this, the child’s condition deteriorated rapidly and he died within some time. Mukesh Kumar alleges that as soon as the ambulance driver came to know about the death of the child, he left the ambulance on the spot and ran away.
After the incident, the family reached Bassi Hospital with the child and informed the police about the entire matter. Bassi police station reached the spot and confiscated the ambulance. After this, Mukesh Kumar returned to Janana Hospital in Bharatpur with the body of his dead newborn. He narrated the entire incident to the staff present there, but the father alleges that no one listened to him seriously nor was any satisfactory answer given.
After this Mukesh Kumar reached Mathura Gate Hospital with the dead body of the child. The police were contacted there, but they were turned away saying that the FIR in this case would be registered at Bassi police station only. After frequent visits to hospitals and police, exhausted Mukesh Kumar returned to his village. The same night he buried the body of his newborn son.
This case highlights the shortcomings of the ambulance service and referral system. The lack of basic facilities like oxygen on the way and the ambulance driver absconding from the spot raise very serious questions. This incident shows how a common man becomes alone in front of the system in times of crisis. Now it has to be seen what action is taken against those responsible in this whole matter and whether this father will ever get justice and answers.
