Senior US MP Brad Sherman has criticized President Donald Trump’s policy, which calls for imposing tariffs on India’s purchase of Russian oil. He said that Trump is looking for excuses to impose unfair and heavy tariffs on India and this decision should be immediately withdrawn.
Hungary imports about 90 percent of its crude oil from Russia.
Sherman, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and House Financial Services Committee, said in a social media post that President Trump claims that the reason for tariffs on India is oil imports from Russia. Raising questions, he said that Hungary imports about 90 percent of its crude oil from Russia, yet such tariffs were not imposed on it. At the same time, China, Russia’s biggest oil buyer, is also not facing sanctions on this basis.
India is being targeted in a different way
Sherman said India imports only about 21 percent of its crude oil from Russia, yet an ally country is being targeted in a different way. They demanded the President immediately reverse this policy. Earlier this month, the US and India agreed to the framework of an interim trade agreement, following which Trump issued an executive order removing the 25 percent punitive tariff imposed on Russian oil purchases by India. President Trump also said that New Delhi has committed, directly or indirectly, to reduce energy imports from Moscow and to purchase American energy products. Under this trade agreement, Washington has decided to reduce the reciprocal tariff imposed on India from 25 percent to 18 percent.
