Bhopal Congress MLA Arif Masood, while clarifying his stand on the controversy over Vande Mataram, said that he will not be able to sing this song, but is not opposing it either. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had read out the list of those who did not sing Vande Mataram in Parliament, in which Masood’s name was also included. Responding to this, Masood said that there are many serious issues pending in the country like Indigo flights are stalled, passengers are troubled, farmers are not getting fertilizer, youth are struggling for employment and at such a time, having a debate in Parliament with a song at the center is a matter of concern.
Arif Masood gave clarification
Arif Masood said that he had only said that he would not be able to sing Vande Mataram. According to Masood, during the freedom struggle, this song was not on the lips of those leaders who are making noise about this issue today. He said that during the freedom struggle, those people were taking bullets while holding the tricolor and those who are raising questions today do not even have the right to speak. Masood says that he has no objection to the sentiment of Vande Mataram, but respect for religious beliefs is equally important.
Politics heated up over Masood’s statement
After this statement of Masood, politics has heated up. BJP accused Congress of appeasement and said that this is an attempt to distance itself from nationalism. BJP’s state media in-charge Ashish Aggarwal commented that the refusal to sing Vande Mataram by a person who became an MLA after taking the oath of the Constitution is like distancing from the soul of the country and the public will respond to it.
Special discussion being held in Parliament on completion of 150 years of Vande Mataram
This controversy has arisen at a time when it has been decided to hold a special discussion in Parliament on the completion of 150 years of Vande Mataram. The government says that this discussion is necessary to understand the history of the national anthem, its role and its importance in the freedom struggle. Whereas the opposition alleges that the Central Government is giving political color to this issue in view of the upcoming elections and unnecessary controversy is being created over the changes in the old verses.
