Bhopal. Chhindwara of Madhya Pradesh has the title of Corn City. Most of the farmers here cultivate maize on a large scale and maize is sent on a large scale to other states of the country along with the state. Everything was fine till the last few years but now the maize farmers have taken to the path of agitation due to not getting the right rates for their produce. According to the farmers, even after deducting the rising inflation and farming expenses, they are not getting the rates for the maize crop, leave alone the profit.
Former MP Nakulnath is seen harmonizing with maize farmers in Corn City. Sometimes he is seen supporting the farmers from the stage, sometimes he is seen protesting by wearing a garland of corn around his neck and sometimes he is seen reaching the market and meeting the maize farmers. Farmers are not able to get the price of maize and traders are buying it at throwaway prices. It is said that now a political battle has erupted in the state regarding the price of maize and the government has also maintained silence.
Congress’s demonstration during the winter assembly session
The special thing is that the Central Government has fixed the MSP of maize at Rs 2400 per quintal. Farmers allege that even after this the Madhya Pradesh government is not purchasing maize at MSP. When the government is not purchasing at MSP, farmers have to sell corn to traders at throwaway prices. So to speak, now farmers seem to be cornering the government regarding the price of maize. Former MP Nakul Nath is seen supporting the maize farmers shoulder to shoulder. On the other hand, during the recent assembly session, the opposition had created ruckus regarding fertiliser, compensation and MSP, calling the government anti-farmer. Even an MLA dressed as a monkey had demonstrated outside the Assembly against the government on several issues, one of which was related to farmers. Chhindwara is known as Mecca city. In Madhya Pradesh, maximum production of maize occurs in Chhindwara. Suitable soil and climate are available here for the cultivation of maize, that is why farmers take interest in the cultivation of maize in the entire district. The maize here is also exported to other states. A 2-day Maize Festival was organized here in September 2018. According to a report, about 88,881 hectares of area has been earmarked for maize cultivation. However, this figure may increase or decrease every year. According to another source, a few years ago maize was grown in an area of āā1,97,877 hectares. Whose productivity was 5023 kg per hectare. For this reason it is also called the city of Mecca i.e. Corn City.
Central government has decided the MSP of maize
If we talk about the price of maize, the Central Government has already fixed the MSP of maize. The Central Government has fixed the MSP for maize at Rs 2400 per quintal. This clearly means that farmers should get this rate and traders should not purchase maize at rates lower than this. But in the market, farmers are getting prices only between Rs 900 and Rs 1500. Rajesh, a farmer from Chhindwara, explains that when the Central Government has fixed the support price for maize purchase at Rs 2400 per quintal, then why is the Madhya Pradesh government not purchasing maize at the support price. In Uttar Pradesh, the government is purchasing at the affordable price of Rs 2400. The traders want to give them maize for free. The maize farmers of the state are shedding tears of blood and the government is sitting idle.
