Joynagar (West Bengal): The hearing process for SIR (Special Intensive Revision) of voter list is going on in the state. Najitul Mollah, 68, of Joynagar in South 24 Parganas district, attended the hearing with oxygen support. But he died the very next day. His family claims that the elderly man died due to panic after receiving the summons for the SIR hearing.
According to local sources, Nazitul Mollah was a resident of North Thakurchak area of Gardevani Panchayat in Joynagar. His name was not in the voter list of 2002. The family claims that he was worried about this very thing. He had a heart attack. On December 20, he was first taken to a hospital in Diamond Harbour. Later, due to his deteriorating condition, he was transferred to Chittaranjan Hospital in Kolkata.
Meanwhile, on December 31, Najitul received a notice to appear in the SIR hearing. His family members signed a bond at the hospital and brought Najitul home. Then they took him to the hearing. The next day, he fell even more ill at home. The family claims that Najitul died after being taken to Chittaranjan Hospital.
Nazitul’s nephew Nazir Hussain Mollah said, “He was ill for a long time. At this time, the summons for the SIR hearing came. Ignoring his physical condition, he attended the hearing with an oxygen tube in his nose. But his body could not bear the pressure of the journey. He died shortly after.”
Statement of Nazitul Mollah’s son
Haroon Mollah, son of deceased Nazitul, said, “We have been living here for many generations. But despite this, my father’s name is not in the voter list of 2002. For the last few days, my father was very worried about this. He always used to say, ‘What will happen to all of you?’ Then a notice came from BDO calling him for hearing. My father was already ill. In the same condition, we fitted him with an oxygen tube and took him to the hearing. Later, he became even more ill. He died due to his physical condition and mental stress. We are still very scared. What will happen to us if my father’s name is not in the list?”
Election Commission and BJP responsible for the death: TMC
Shahabuddin Shaikh, Trinamool Congress leader from Joynagar, said, “People are losing their lives one after the other in Bengal because of the Election Commission’s conspiracy called SIR. This time, Najitul Mollah lost his life. After his name came up in the hearing, he got scared and stopped eating and drinking. The Election Commission and the BJP should take responsibility for his death. We will keep fighting against it.”
Biswanath Patra, vice president of BJP’s Joynagar district organization, said, “The death of that elderly person is very bad. But if someone dies due to physical illness, then the ruling party of the state is doing politics by linking that death to SIR. If someone dies in this environment of SIR in the state, then the Trinamool Congress is calling it a death due to fear arising from SIR. We want the police and administration to investigate the entire matter thoroughly.”
Baruipur area Additional Superintendent of Police Rupantar Sengupta said, “We have not yet received any complaint from the family. After receiving the complaint, we will investigate the entire matter.”
