Drone crisis on French nuclear submarines

Due to the Russia-Ukraine war, tension in Europe is already at its peak and meanwhile, a very worrying incident has come to light from France. Five unknown drones were seen hovering over the nuclear submarine base located on the Ile Long Peninsula, the country’s most secure military base. This is the same place where France keeps its four nuclear ballistic submarines. If there was a conspiracy to attack this, it could have been France’s Pearl Harbor moment. In fact, during the Second World War, Japan had attacked America’s Pearl Harbor, due to which there was devastation on the American base. After this attack America entered the war. According to the report, the incident site is an area in Northwest France whose security is handled by the Atlantic Maritime Prefecture. Their spokesman Guillaume Le Rasle confirmed that drones were seen directly above sensitive infrastructure, although he said there was no immediate threat. According to him, this action could also be an ‘attempt to scare the public’.

What did France do when it saw the drone?

According to the report of French newspaper Le Monde, counter-drone and search operation was started as soon as the drone was seen. The Marine Rifle Battalion, which handles the security of this base, also fired on the drone. However, it is not yet clear whether any drone was shot down or not. Being a sensitive site like a nuclear submarine, this incident is raising concerns about security in Europe. France has long been alert to the danger of any such potential ‘hybrid warfare’ activity.

Have there been cases of drone sighting before?

This incident is part of the same pattern that has been seen across Europe over the past few months. This week, 4-5 drones were also seen on the west coast of Ireland, which appeared in the path of Ukrainian President Zelensky right after his flight. The drones hovered almost stationary above the Irish Navy ship ‘Le William Butler Yates’, as if they were deliberately trying to be seen. Security agencies say that these incidents could also be an attempt to test Europe’s air security on a large scale.

Drone incidents are continuously happening in Europe

Since September 10, many European countries have seen mysterious drones in their airspace. The most serious case was in Poland, where 19 drones were seen crossing the border from Belarus. Since then, many countries have accused Russia of this. However, Russia has been denying responsibility every time.
