New Delhi . In the local body elections in Maharashtra, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (Congress) alliance ‘Mahayuti’ has won 75 percent of the seats. Mahayuti won the post of president in 215 bodies out of total 288. After the assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party has emerged as the largest party in this election also. The party has secured the chair of 129 presidents. Now it is being said that this victory may affect the opposition as well as BJP’s allies in the state.
Elections and results
Voting for 286 nagar panchayats and municipal councils in Maharashtra was held in two phases on December 2 and December 20. These include 246 city councils and 42 nagar panchayats. In the first phase, 67 percent voters voted for 263 bodies, while in the second phase, 47 percent voters voted for 23 bodies. Counting of votes for all the bodies started from Sunday morning.
In the results released till late evening, the grand alliance of BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP (Ajit Pawar) had won 215 body president posts. Of these, Bharatiya Janata Party has won 129, Shiv Sena has won 51 and NCP (Ajit Pawar) has won 35 presidential posts.
There was ‘friendly fight’ among Mahayuti candidates at many places.
There were also friendly fights in many bodies between the three constituent parties of Mahayuti, BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP. These parties had fielded their respective candidates at these places. In such contests, Shiv Sena defeated BJP in Kankavali, Dahanu and Palghar. Meanwhile, in Loha, Ajit Pawar’s NCP defeated BJP president candidate Gajanan Suryavanshi and his five family members. Interestingly, the name of the winning presidential candidate of NCP here is Sharad Pawar. On the other hand, BJP registered victory over Shiv Sena in Vadnagar.
What does it mean for colleagues?
Like Lok Sabha or Assembly elections, BJP campaigned in local elections. It is being said that through this the party had a chance to know whether it is moving towards its goal of ‘100 percent BJP’ or not. According to a report in Indian Express, this is the political future where BJP will not need its allies.
In such a situation, local elections proved to be an important milestone. As a result, BJP’s allies may not view this election as positively as the party itself would. Talking to the newspaper, a BJP leader said, ‘These results will increase the confidence of the workers in the municipal elections to be held on January 15.’
what about the opposition
After a big setback in the assembly elections, lagging behind in the local elections can increase the problems of the opposition. Especially when a few weeks are left for the BMC i.e. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections. Here Shiv Sena (UBT) would like to maintain its influence of 3 decades. In the local elections, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP) could not even touch double figures of seats. These results may become a cause of concern for the parties already weakened due to divisions.
Devendra Fadnavis’s statement
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Sunday, ‘This is the result of collective efforts of both the organization and the government. We contested elections on the issue of development. I led the campaign based on a positive development agenda and I never criticized any political leader or party.
The Chief Minister said that he sought votes on the basis of development agenda, work done so far and future plans. He said, ‘For the first time I had asked for 100 per cent positive votes, and people gave us 100 per cent positive votes.’
