The situation has become more tense amid efforts to end the Ukraine war. Just before the proposed important meeting of US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia attacked Kiev and many areas of Ukraine with missiles and drones.
These attacks have clearly indicated that the path to peace is still extremely difficult and full of dangers. Loud explosions were heard in Kyiv on Saturday morning. Ukraine’s air defense system was immediately activated and efforts began to shoot down Russian missiles and drones in the sky.
Red alert issued in Ukraine
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia targeted the capital Kiev as well as the north-eastern and southern areas of the country. The attacks continued till 8 am and air raid alert remained in force in the capital. According to the Kiev administration, at least eight people have been injured in these attacks. A day before this, Russia had also intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and southern Odessa region.
Pressure increased before Trump-Zelensky meeting
The timing of these attacks is considered very important, because Zelensky is to meet Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday. Zelensky has said that in this meeting, who will control which areas after stopping the war, this will be the biggest issue. According to the Ukrainian President, about 90 percent of the 20-point peace proposal being prepared under the leadership of America has been prepared. He also indicated that many big decisions can be taken before the New Year.
Land and security guarantee are the biggest hurdles
Zelensky says that the biggest obstacle to a peace agreement is the distribution of land. Russia wants Ukraine to withdraw from the eastern Donbass region, while Kiev wants a ceasefire on the existing fronts. Apart from this, security guarantee is also a big issue. Zelensky said that the US has proposed a 15-year security guarantee, but Ukraine wants a stronger and legally binding agreement so that Russia cannot attack again in the future.
