Raipur : As per the far-sighted vision of Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, health services are continuously expanding in the state, due to which better health facilities are now being available at the district headquarters. A live example of this was seen in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (SNCU) of District Hospital Kondagaon, where a critical newborn baby got a new life.

Under the continuous direction of Collector Nupur Rashi Panna, Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. R. Of. Under the guidance of Chaturvedi and the leadership of Civil Surgeon cum Chief Hospital Superintendent Dr. Premlal Mandavi, the health services of the district hospital are being continuously strengthened. Due to availability of necessary resources, life saving equipment and medicines and regular monitoring, today SNCU has become a ray of hope for remote areas.
The newborn baby of Bo Sukhdai Markam and Chaitram Markam, residents of village Rakasbeda, development block Makdi, was born on 18 December 2025 at 5:28 pm. The baby’s condition became extremely serious immediately after birth. On 20 December 2025, the infant was admitted to SNCU. The baby weighed 2.70 kg at birth and was suffering from complex problems like birth asphyxia, frequent seizures and infections. The mother was also found to have severe oligohydramnios during pregnancy.

SNCU team including pediatrician Dr. Rudra Kashyap, Dr. Rajesh Baghel and Dr. Paromita Sutradhar started immediate treatment of the baby. Oxygen support and antibiotics were given in the initial days, but when there was no expected improvement, the baby was put on mechanical ventilation on the fifth day.

Where the treatment continued under close monitoring for 12 days. During treatment, complications like sepsis and gastrointestinal bleeding were identified in the baby. The medical team promptly provided high-grade antibiotics and fluconazole as needed. Phenobarbitone/phenytoin medications were administered to control recurrent seizures. The expertise, sensitivity and constant monitoring of the doctors kept this little life safe.

After 18 consecutive days of intensive treatment, the baby’s condition started improving. After stabilization, Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) was started for 10 days from day 19, which led to significant improvement in the health of the baby. After about 27 days of tireless efforts, the baby was discharged in a completely stable condition.

As per the priority of the state government, now advanced health facilities are being made available at the district level itself, due to which the citizens of remote areas do not need to go to the metros. Necessary resources are being made available by the Collector from time to time to strengthen the system of SNCU of the District Hospital and continuous monitoring is also being done. The above case is an example of better care and services and teamwork of the newborn babies of the district hospital unit.
