Mumbai This indicates an important change in the politics of Maharashtra. After the grand victory of the grand alliance (BJP, Shinde Sena, and Ajit Pawar NCP) in the Municipal Council elections, the opposition parties are now forced to change their strategy for the Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
In fact, Mahayuti has gained a clear lead in the Municipal Council elections, while Maha Vikas Aghadi has lagged far behind. The defeat has prompted Congress to introspect and look for new allies. At the same time, the discussions about a possible alliance between Shiv Sena-UBT and MNS (MNS) have made the Congress uncomfortable, due to which it is now extending its hand towards Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA). 4 meetings have been held in the last 10 days. Big leaders like Mumbai in-charge UB Venkatesh, Varsha Gaikwad, Aslam Shaikh and Sachin Sawant were present in Sunday’s meeting. Prakash Ambedkar’s VBA has a strong support base among the Dalit and marginalized communities of Mumbai. Congress hopes that together they will be able to challenge the ruling coalition in BMC. Sawant and Sheikh were also included in the delegation. The old party has also formed a 3-member committee for this, which includes Amin Patel, Madhu Chavan and Sachin Sawant. According to sources, there have been positive talks between the two parties so far and the alliance may be announced soon. Mumbai Congress president Varsha said the conversation underlined the importance of constructive dialogue and democratic engagement in the days to come.
Voting for the BMC and other 28 municipal corporations is scheduled for January 15, which means the alliance will have to be finalized very soon. The biggest challenge will be to reach a respectable agreement between Congress and VBA on 227 seats in Mumbai. If Congress and Uddhav Thackeray contest elections with different allies, then Mahayuti can directly benefit from it.
