MP News: In Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, due to greed for dowry, a businessman along with his wife threw acid on his four-month-old innocent daughter. The incident took place in Mainawali street. The innocent girl got injured at many places on her body due to acid splashes. After some improvement in the girl’s condition, the family lodged a police complaint on Thursday. According to the police, the accused was married to a girl resident of Dabra about two and a half years ago. The victim told the police that it was only after marriage that she came to know that her husband was addicted to alcohol. He used to harass her every day to get dowry from her parents’ house. Many times his parents and relatives also tried to convince him, but his behavior did not change.

They fought even though they had a daughter
The victim told that she gave birth to a daughter four months ago. The husband also taunted her regarding this matter and beat her up, accusing her of having a daughter instead of a son. According to the victim, four days ago there was another dispute in the house regarding demand for dowry. Meanwhile, the husband got angry and threw acid. She somehow survived, but the acid hit the wall and fell on the four-month-old girl lying nearby. After the incident, the woman went to her maternal home with her daughter. When the girl’s condition improved, she reached the police station and lodged a complaint. Kotwali police station in-charge Mohani Verma said that the accused is currently absconding. Police are searching for him and the matter is being investigated.

Dowry harassment figures are increasing rapidly
Official statistics from the state show that at least one woman dies every day in the state due to dowry harassment. In September 2025, CM Mohan Yadav had given written information in the House that 719 dowry deaths had taken place in the last 18 months. According to government data, a total of 21 dowry deaths were recorded between December 15 and December 31, 2023. Next year, from January 1 to December 31, 2024, this number will increase to 459 and in the first six months of 2025 alone, 239 women lost their lives in dowry-related cases. This written reply was given by CM Mohan Yadav in the Assembly.
