History of Basukinath Temple
There are two main stories prevalent regarding the history of Basukinath temple. According to the first legend, this temple was built by a man named ‘Basu’, who was an ordinary villager. It is said that while digging the land, Basu found a Shivalinga, which was established there. For this reason this place was named ‘Basukinath’.
The second and more famous story is related to the churning of the ocean. According to mythological beliefs, when the gods and demons together churned the ocean, the Mandarachal mountain was made the churner and the serpent ‘Vasuki’ was made the rope (Neti). To get relief from the pain that Nagraj Vasuki suffered during churning, he performed severe penance for Lord Shiva at this very place. Mahadev was pleased and appeared before him and was established here as ‘Basukinath’ in the name of Nagraj.
Connection with Baidyanath Dham
The glory of Basukinath is inextricably linked with that of Baba Baidyanath (Devghar). There is a famous saying among Shiva devotees – “Devghar ka Kachari, Basukinath ka Diwani.” This means that the devotees submit their petition in Deoghar and their hearing is completed by coming to Basukinath. It is believed that unless a devotee comes and has darshan of Basukinath after offering water in Devghar, his journey and worship is not considered successful.
temple architecture
The main temple of Basukinath is very grand and built in traditional architectural style. Apart from the main temple, there are also small temples of many other gods and goddesses. Crowds of devotees throng here in the month of Sawan (Shravan month). The ‘Kanwariyas’ who bring Ganga water from Sultanganj, reach here barefoot after Devghar and anoint Mahadev.
There is a lake near Basukinath temple, about which it is believed that bathing in it removes the impurities of body and mind.
