Raipur : The members of the Freedom Fighter Fishermen Cooperative Society of village Maharpur in Lormi development block of the district have got support of livelihood. Steps are being taken towards economic empowerment by scientific method of fish farming in Bharat Sagar Reservoir and Gabda Reservoir obtained on lease by the members of the committee. Balanced culture of Indian majorcarp local fish species is being done by the committee in these reservoirs spread over about 96 hectares of water area. Under departmental guidance, the committee adopted the target of harvesting fish seeds of 100 kg per hectare per day, due to which a continuous increase in production was recorded.

At present the committee is getting an income of more than Rs 1 lakh 50 thousand every year from fisheries, which has strengthened the economic condition of the members. More than 40 members are working organically under the leadership of committee chairman Mr. Dinesh Dhiwar. The Fisheries Department provides training, technical guidance and information about schemes to the members from time to time. Measures like stocking of fish seeds at 50 percent subsidy in reservoirs, regular monitoring and quality feed management have taken the production to new heights. The fish produced by the committee has good demand in the local market. By selling an average of 100 kg of fish per day, the committee is not only earning economic benefits but is also creating employment opportunities in the area. This has provided a permanent means of livelihood to the villagers in the village itself.
