Pradosh fast is considered to have special significance in Hindu religion. This fast is observed to worship Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. It is believed that worship done with true heart on this day pleases Lord Shiva and fulfills the wishes of the devotees. It is believed that observing fast on the day of Pradosh brings blessings of happiness, peace, prosperity and success in the house. There are two Pradosh fasts every month, which are celebrated on Trayodashi date. On this day, devotees observe a fast from morning and worship Lord Shiva with rituals in the evening. Water, milk and Belpatra are offered on Shivalinga and after Aarti the fast is broken. Pradosh Vrat, the first of March and the last of Phalgun month, is considered particularly fruitful. By worshiping with devotion and rules on this day, one attains special virtues.
According to the Vedic calendar, the Trayodashi tithi of Shukla Paksha of Phalgun month will begin on Saturday, February 28, at around 8:43 pm. This date will last till around 7:09 pm on Sunday, March 1st. In Pradosh Vrat, not the rising date but only the puja time of Pradosh period is recognised. For this reason, the first Pradosh fast of the month of March will be observed on March 1st. Since it is Sunday, it will be called Ravi Pradosh Vrat, which is considered to have special religious significance.
Importance of Ravi Pradosh fast
Worshiping Sun God along with Lord Shiva on the day of Ravi Pradosh fast is also considered very auspicious. It is believed that by worshiping both the deities on this day, a person gets opportunities to progress in his career and opens new paths to success. This day is considered special for those who want progress in job or business. The importance of Ravi Pradosh fast has also been mentioned in Shiv Purana and Skanda Purana. It is mentioned in these that by fasting on this day with devotion and rule, a person gets relief from diseases and many defects of life are removed, and also gets the blessings of happiness, prosperity and increase in wealth in the house. It is considered beneficial to observe this fast with faith and belief.
Must follow these rules
1. On the day of Pradosh fast, wake up early in the morning, after taking bath etc., offer Arghya to the Sun God and take a pledge to fast.
2. After this, clean the place of worship thoroughly and anoint Lord Shiva with Panchamrit.
3. Worship Shiva family and offer bel leaves, flowers, incense, lamps etc. to Lord Shiva. After this, recite the story of Pradosh Vrat.
4. At the end of the puja, perform Aarti of Lord Shiva and recite Shiva Chalisa. Break your fast only after this.
