There are many such temples in India, which are not only centers of devotion but also of art, history and peace. Just 67 km from Chikmagalur district of Karnataka, in the small village of Amritapura situated on the banks of river Bhadra, is the Amriteshwar Temple, a precious gem of Chalukya Empire architecture. This temple is a witness to Ramayana written in reverse direction, while its other secrets are also shocking.
epics are written on stones
It was built by the Hoysala dynasty during their rule, which has now become a hallmark of Karnataka’s architectural heritage. Built in 1196 AD, this Shiva temple not only gives spiritual peace to the devotees, but also shows the tourists a world of 800 year old carvings and epics written on stones, which leaves them in awe as soon as they see them.
The Amriteshwar Temple was built by the Hoysala emperor Veera Ballal II, which is not only dedicated to Lord Shiva but is also a document of the art, craft and spirituality of that period. This temple built in Hoysala style is as beautiful from outside as it is from inside. The outer walls of the temple are covered with circular designs and carvings. There is a closed pavilion in front and then a huge open pavilion. Both rest on shiny lathed pillars. Looking at these shining pillars, no one can believe that they are more than 800 years old.
The most unique thing is the 140 epic stories written on the outer walls of the temple. On the south wall, 70 scenes from the Ramayana are carved anti-clockwise, while on the north wall, 25 panels depict the childhood exploits of Lord Krishna and the remaining 45 panels depict the events of the Mahabharata through beautiful carvings. As if the entire epic was written on stones.
Trimurti Shivalinga seated in the sanctum sanctorum
Information is received that the craftsman of Hoysala art, Mallitamma, started his art here and this temple is considered to be the first chapter of the Hoysala golden age. In the sanctum sanctorum, the ancient Trimurti Shivlinga brought from the Kandaki river of Nepal is present, next to it is a beautiful goddess Sharda.
Along with this, a warrior fighting with a lion, Kirtimukh on the peak, small towers and the scene of Gajsur killing are also engraved on the walls. There are floral designs on the roofs and carvings on the pillars.
The peaceful environment, the gurgling sound of the Bhadra River, and the widespread greenery attract tourists. Bilva Archana and Kumkum Archana are especially famous in the temple.
