SiliguriThe issue of Gorkhaland, related to the federal structure of the country and reorganization of states, has once again come to the center of national political discussion. Before the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, representatives of the Gorkha community met BJP national president Nitin Naveen and reiterated their old demand for a separate Gorkhaland state. It was also said that if a separate state is not possible, then North Bengal should be given the status of a Union Territory. In this meeting held in Siliguri, representatives of the Gorkha community presented in detail the administrative, economic and political problems of the hilly areas. BJP MP from Darjeeling and national spokesperson Raju Bisht and BJP MLA Neeraj Zimba were also present in the meeting. After the meeting, MP Raju Bisht said, every citizen has the right to express his views and the suffering of the Gorkha community should come to the fore. He said that BJP believes in solution through dialogue and if BJP government is formed in the state in 2026, a permanent solution to the mountain problems will be found. He also said that as an MP, he stands strongly with the Gorkha community.

The demand for Gorkhaland is not new

The demand for Gorkhaland has been a part of national politics since the 1980s. There were several movements in Darjeeling and surrounding hilly areas demanding a separate state. Following the 2007 movement, the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) was formed, with the aim of resolving the problems through territorial self-governance. However, Gorkha organizations allege that despite the formation of GTA, the basic problems remain the same.

State Reorganization and National Context

The country has a history of formation of new states from time to time. Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh were formed in the year 2000, while Telangana was formed in 2014. In such a situation, supporters have been calling the demand for Gorkhaland a legitimate political demand within the constitutional ambit. However, the West Bengal government has consistently opposed any proposal to partition the state.

political equation

Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat has been dominated by BJP for a long time. BJP has been getting continuous support in the hilly region, but local dissatisfaction has also come to the fore from time to time due to the demand for a separate state not being met. Political analysts believe that the issue of state division is also a balancing challenge for the BJP, because on one hand there are aspirations of the hills and on the other hand there are political sensitivities of the entire state.

Centre’s initiative

In view of the situation in the mountains, the Central Government has already taken the initiative to take the dialogue process forward and appoint a mediator, so that a solution can be found through dialogue. In this sequence, the latest meeting of BJP leadership with Gorkha leaders is being considered important. Political analysts believe that the question of Gorkhaland is not just a regional but a broader issue related to national federal structure, identity politics and administrative decentralization. In the coming times, it will be important to see whether a concrete solution to this long pending demand can be found through dialogue and political consensus.
