Leader of Opposition in Chhattisgarh Assembly, Dr. Charandas Mahant has intervened in the case of the death of an elderly tribal in Hanspur village of Balrampur district. He has written a letter to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Scheduled Tribe Commission for high-level investigation and action in this entire matter. Describing this incident as a blot on humanity, he has demanded strictest action against the accused.
Dr. Charandas Mahant has written in his letter that during the administrative action taken by an SDM level officer in Hanspur village, excessive force was allegedly used, which resulted in the death of an innocent elderly tribal. He said that this incident is extremely unfortunate and serious, due to which there is a wave of anger in the entire area.
The Leader of Opposition said that this incident, which happened in the name of law and order, has raised serious questions on administrative accountability and the fundamental rights of the tribal community.

The entire matter is of 16 February 2026. SDM Karun Kumar Dahria and his team had reached Kusmi police station area of Balrampur district to stop illegal excavation. It is alleged that during this time SDM Karun and his team started beating the villagers without making any inquiry. SDM Karun Dahria is accused of assaulting 3 villagers. One of these villagers died. SDM Karun Dahria has also been suspended in this entire matter.
