Amidst the crowds thronging Shiva temples on Mahashivratri and the chants of “Har Har Mahadev”, one thing that stands out is the offering of Thandai. There are deep religious, scientific and mythological reasons behind offering thandai to Lord Shiva and drinking it by devotees.
Mahashivratri is a festival of worshiping, fasting and praying to Lord Shiva. On this day, Thandai, a traditional drink made from milk, is prepared at home and offered as Prasad in temples across North India. This drink has cultural and religious significance. Thandai is made from dry fruits, seeds, mild spices and milk. It completely balances the body during the fast and is a symbol of purity and peace. These Thandai are deeply associated with Lord Shiva.
Mahashivratri is celebrated in February, when the cold gradually subsides and the body starts adjusting to seasonal changes. Thandai made with cold ingredients like almonds, fennel, melon seeds and milk helps in cooling down the heat accumulated in the body during the fast.
Traditionally, Thandai was made to energize the devotees who remained engaged in puja throughout the night and keep the body hydrated. Its relaxing properties add to the calm and meditative spirit of this festival, making it an ideal drink for both fasting and relaxation.
According to mythology, Shiva is associated with cool things like Mount Kailash, the crescent moon and the river Ganga. Thandai, if served cold or at room temperature, shows its coolness. Drinking it during Mahashivratri is considered a way of showing respect towards God, especially during pujas and all-night vigil.
Lord Shiva is often associated with peace, renunciation, and inner balanceāqualities that are perfectly reflected in Thandai.
Unlike tea or other sweet drinks, Thandai nourishes without making you feel heavy. It is a refreshing and nutritious drink that helps in energy and hydration, making it perfect for festivals or fasting occasions.
The main reason for offering Thandai (cannabis mixture) to Lord Shiva on Mahashivratri is to cool him after drinking poison. It is believed that drinking the poison released from Samudra Manthan had caused severe burning sensation in Mahadev’s body, and to pacify him, the gods offered cool water (e.g. water, vine leaves, milk) and Thandai.
