New Delhi. Amidst the rapidly changing equations in global politics and challenges to Western dominance, Asia’s two superpowers, India and China, have given a concrete signal of giving a new and positive direction to their relations. During the high-level strategic talks held in New Delhi on Tuesday, both the countries emphasized that they are not a threat to each other, but are development partners. In this important meeting, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and China’s Acting Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoshu held detailed discussions on solving the complexities of bilateral relations and preparing a roadmap for the future.
China’s Executive Vice-Minister Ma Zhaoshu is currently on a visit to India in connection with the BRICS meetings. During the talks, there was a clear and in-depth discussion on the international and regional situation as well as the domestic and foreign policies of both the countries. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, it is essential for India and China to come together in the current global turmoil. China stressed that the two nations should look at their relations from a long-term and strategic perspective, which would strengthen not only these two countries but the entire Global South. During the talks, it was agreed to restore mutual trust and resolve differences diplomatically. Both countries have decided that they will fully support each other’s BRICS chairmanship in the years 2026 and 2027. Also, the commitment to work together to promote the central role of the United Nations and multilateralism was reiterated. China also indicated that it respects India’s role and aspirations in international forums and the UN Security Council.
Describing the talks as constructive, the Indian Foreign Ministry made it clear that peace and stability in the border areas is the first condition for the progress of bilateral relations. India stressed that maintaining peace along the Line of Actual Control is the foundation of strong relations. In the talks, it was agreed to look at trade issues and economic cooperation from a strategic perspective. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri expressed satisfaction over the resumption of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and hoped for its expansion. Practical steps to get relations back on track were also discussed, including finalizing a new agreement for air services and simplifying visa procedures. Both sides agreed that the deadlock in relations after the Galwan conflict of 2020 is now gradually reducing. The meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in Kazan in October 2024 and Tianjin in August 2025 have given new energy to this reform process. Now both the countries are taking steps towards a stable and balanced future in Asia through this joint coordination of Elephant and Dragon.
