Pyongyan. In North Korea, people are being sentenced to death and sent to labor camps for watching TV shows from arch-enemy South Korea or listening to K-pop. School children are also included in this. Amnesty International has given this information in its report.
According to the report, people who fled North Korea told that watching popular South Korean dramas like Crash Landing on You, Descendants of the Sun and Squid Game or listening to K-pop could lead to death sentence. People who do not have money or good connections suffer the most.
People who fled the dictator’s country said that there is an atmosphere of fear in the country and that South Korean culture is considered a major crime. At the same time, rich people often escape punishment by bribing officials. But because the poor do not have money they have to suffer punishment.
Sarah Brooks, deputy regional director of Amnesty International, said that North Korea is implementing such a law that even watching a TV show can be fatal for you. He said the government was criminalizing access to information and officials were taking advantage of it.
He said that because of the fear of the North Korean government, the entire country is locked in a kind of ideological prison. Those who want to learn about the outside world or just want to be entertained are given the most severe punishment. This system is based on fear and corruption and violates international human rights.
