In Sanatan Dharma, Lord Shiva is considered to be a very kind and quick to please god. It is said that if even just one Belpatra is offered to Lord Shiva with a true heart and any wish is asked from him, then it is definitely fulfilled. This is the reason why Belpatra has special religious significance for Shiva devotees.

The holy festival of Mahashivratri will be celebrated with devotion and faith across the country on 15 February. On this day all the Shiva temples of the country are decorated grandly. From early morning, chants of Har Har Mahadev start echoing in the temples. Devotees worship Lord Bholenath by offering water, milk, ashes, Dhatura and especially Belpatra.
Baba Baidyanath is worshiped with 16 types of worship materials.
The festival of Mahashivratri is very special in Baba Baidyanathdham located in Deoghar, Jharkhand, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of the country. Here, on the day of Mahashivratri, special worship of Lord Shiva is done in the four prahars with the Shodashopachar method. This worship method is considered very rare, in which Baba Baidyanath is worshiped with 16 types of worship materials. On this day, the most special attraction in Baba Baidyanathdham is the offering of Belpatra. All the pilgrim priests of the temple offer different types of Belpatra to Lord Bholenath. This tradition has been going on for years and it has its own special belief.

What do the pilgrims of Baidyanathdham say:
Shrinath Pandit, the famous pilgrimage priest of Deoghar, says that several days before Mahashivratri, the pilgrim priests go out in search of rare Bel leaves. They pluck three-leaf, five-leaf and seven-leaf bel leaves from Trikut mountain, Digharaiya mountain and dense forests of Bihar. These Bel leaves are not common, but are considered extremely rare. According to Shrinath Pandit, by offering these special Bel leaves to Baba Baidyanath, Lord Shiva becomes extremely pleased and the wishes of the devotees are quickly fulfilled. It is believed that the devotee who visits Baba Baidyanath with a true heart and offers Belpatra on the day of Mahashivratri, troubles, diseases and obstacles are removed from his life.
On the occasion of Mahashivratri, lakhs of devotees from India and abroad reach Baba Baidyanathdham. The entire city of Deoghar becomes Shiva-like. A wonderful confluence of devotion, faith and belief is seen everywhere. That is why this festival of Mahashivratri and Baba Baidyanathdham is not only a symbol of religious faith, but it also shows the deep roots of Sanatan culture.
