Mumbai Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has announced the names of women candidates for the post of mayor in Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli and Ulhasnagar municipal corporations. There is no reservation on these posts, yet the party has expressed confidence in women. Eknath Shinde gave this information on Monday.
A statement issued from Eknath Shinde’s office said that Sharmila Pimpolkar-Gaikwad will be nominated for the post of Mayor in Thane Municipal Corporation. At the same time, this responsibility will be given to Harshali Thavil Chaudhary in Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation and Ashwini Nikam in Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation. This will be the first time in the history of these municipal corporations that a woman will hold the post of mayor without reservation.
The party said that this decision has been taken thoughtfully, so that women empowerment can be promoted beyond the mandatory quota. “Women should get opportunities based on their ability and leadership without waiting for reservation,” the statement said. Shiv Sena also said that when there was no reservation on these posts, there was speculation that a male mayor would be elected, but the party has expressed confidence in its sisters.
According to the statement, Shiv Sena MP from Kalyan Dr Shrikant Shinde had advocated that capable women councilors should be given a chance for the top civic post. His proposal was approved by Eknath Shinde. The party also pointed out that out of 29 Shiv Sena councilors in Brihanmumbai Municipality, 19 are women. Of the 90 candidates fielded in the BMC elections, 63 were women.
