Durg. As part of the campaign to stop usury in the district, Kumhari police station took major action. Accused Sachin Dwivedi (23) was arrested for extorting illegal amount at 15 percent interest and threatening. According to the police, this action has created a stir among the moneylenders active in the district and this campaign will continue.
Method of complaint and accused
Mrs. Suman Tandon, aged 45, resident of Kumhari told the police that small amounts of money were lent to her son, which totaled Rs 2,55,000. The accused started collecting the amount under pressure by charging 15 percent interest. During recovery, Rs 3,01,166 and Rs 93,650 in cash were recovered through phone-pay. Despite this, the accused continuously demanded more money and intimidated the victim by threatening to kill him.
Police action and legal process
Kumar police registered a case under crime number 39/2026 under sections 308(2), 308(4), 351(3) of BNS and section 04 of Chhattisgarh Borrowers’ Protection Act 1937. The accused confessed to the crime during interrogation and was arrested and further legal action was initiated.
Appeal to the public and continuation of the campaign
The police have appealed to the common citizens to immediately inform if anyone extorts illegal interest or makes threats. The campaign is going on continuously to create a usury free environment in the district and strict action will be taken against all the usurers.
