Senior advocate Vishnu Jain, appearing for the petitioners, argued in the court that Section 3C of the UGC Regulations, which has provisions related to SC, ST and OBC, could promote caste discrimination. On this, the Supreme Court put a stay on the rules for the time being and said that the next hearing of the case 19 March Will happen.

During the hearing, CJI Surya Kant said that arrangements like separate hostels for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) students should be reconsidered. He said that many people even in the reserved category have now become economically and socially prosperous and have better facilities than other students.
