Raipur : Tribal Pride Vatika has today become an excellent example of development, environmental protection and employment generation in Bastar district. Located in the Kumhadakot area of Jagdalpur, this place was once a dumping ground affected by filth and encroachment, but has now become a beautiful tourist destination and a center of self-employment.

The special initiatives of the Forest Department and the schemes of the government have an important contribution behind this change.

Under the guidance of Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap and the leadership of Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Arun Kumar Pandey, this area was extensively developed. This area of reserved forest block room number 1021 has been cleaned and a nature trail of about 1700 meters long has been made here. Also a beautiful pond and an attractive island have been developed. For the health and entertainment of the people, facilities of yoga platform, yoga shed and open gym have been provided. Five beautiful pagodas and an attractive bridge have also been built for sitting purposes.

The special thing about this garden is its rich vegetation. Medicinal plants, fruit trees and various species of bamboo have been planted here. The entire Vatika has been developed as an eco-friendly and plastic free area. This project is not limited to environmental improvement only, but it has also provided employment to local women. Jungle canteen is being run here by women self-help group, where tourists enjoy local cuisine.

DFO Uttam Kumar Gupta said that through this initiative a group of 20 women have become self-reliant. So far, more than 10 thousand tourists have come here, due to which the women’s group has earned an income of about two lakh rupees. Today this place has become a favorite place for morning walks, yoga and peace for the city residents. This journey from ‘Garbage to Pride’ shows that rejuvenation of any place is possible with right planning, strong leadership and public participation. This success story is an inspiring example towards environmental protection and women empowerment.
