Raipur : Under the Dhan Dhanya Yojana run by Chhattisgarh Government and District Administration Dantewada, continuous efforts are being made to move the district towards organic and toxic-free farming. The positive result of this initiative has come out in the form of Mr. Sanjay, a progressive farmer of village Hitawar (development block Kuakonda), who has presented an inspiring success story to the farmers of the area by producing maize completely organically by abandoning chemical farming.
Decision to adopt organic farming
Dhan Dhanya Yojana (Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana) is a new agricultural scheme of the Government of India, which aims to select 100 most backward districts of the country (with low productivity) and make them self-reliant, in which 36 schemes of 11 ministries will be integrated, so that farmers’ income and agricultural production of the country can be increased by focusing on irrigation, crop diversification, credit, animal husbandry and natural farming. This scheme has been created to empower farmers, add value to agriculture and achieve the goal of self-reliant India.
Departmental guidance and use of biological techniques
Troubled by the declining soil fertility and increasing dependence on chemical fertilizers, Sanjay took guidance from the Agriculture Department and decided to do farming completely organically this year. The field staff of the Agriculture Department gave them detailed information about the benefits of toxic-free farming, importance of biological resources and measures to improve soil health. As per the guidance, Sanjay used cow dung and vermicompost for field preparation, Trichoderma and Beejamrit for seed treatment and organic solutions like Jeevamrit and Ghanjeevamrit for crop nutrition. Despite stopping the use of chemical fertilizers, there was no nutritional deficiency in the maize crop. Rather, the crop looked greener, healthier and more attractive than before.
Lower cost and better yield – double advantage
Organic farming has significantly reduced Sanjay’s costs as he does not need to buy expensive chemical fertilizers. Currently the maize ears in his farm are strong. The grain filling is excellent and being an organic produce he is expected to get better prices in the market. Sanjay says that before the use of chemical fertilizers, the expenses used to increase and the land was becoming hard, but this year due to organic farming, the crop was good and the cost also reduced. Now they are planning to adopt organic methods in other crops also.
Inspirational example for the farmers of the area
Farmer Sanjay’s initiative has proved that with right guidance, hard work and strong willpower, organic farming can be completely successful. Their success is an important step in expanding organic and toxic-free farming in the Kuakonda region. In line with the objective of Dhan Dhanya Yojana, this success story is giving a new direction to natural agriculture in Dantewada district and is also inspiring other farmers.
