Bhopal : As per the intention of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, Public Works Minister Rakesh Singh inspected the 3D printing based building construction technology at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras on Wednesday.

Public Works Minister Singh said that 3D printing technology will not only speed up building construction but will also improve the quality. In huge events like Simhastha Kumbh Mela to be held in Ujjain in the year 2028, where construction of buildings is required at a fast pace as per the circumstances, 3D printing based construction technology can prove to be very effective.

Minister Singh also said that the Public Works Department is making efforts at every level to implement new technologies, innovations and best practices in the state. In this sequence, this study tour of IIT Madras has been organized. He informed that earlier the delegation of Public Works Department had also studied new construction techniques and modern working systems in Gujarat, Telangana and Maharashtra. The Gujarat study tour was led by Minister Singh himself.

Minister Singh explained that 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is different from traditional manufacturing methods. In this, first the digital design of the building is prepared on the computer and then the structure is constructed by printing concrete or other construction material layer by layer using special machines. The process greatly reduces the need for brick, shuttering and traditional casting, making construction more rapid, accurate and controlled.

Minister Singh said that while traditional construction takes months, with 3D printing technology many structures can be built in a few days. Constraints such as weather, labor availability and shuttering have limited impact on this technology. This technology can prove to be especially useful in disaster-affected areas, emergency shelter, schools and health infrastructure.

Digital design based manufacturing ensures uniform quality, high accuracy and superior structural strength, while also reducing the possibility of human errors. However, it was also clarified that at present this technology is not a complete substitute for every type of construction. To adopt this, pilot projects, special training of engineers and coordination with technical institutes and start-ups will be necessary.

Minister Singh also said that in the coming time, such study tours will be organized in other technical institutes and states of the country also, so that new technologies can be understood and implemented in a phased and safe manner as per the needs of the state.

During the study tour, the Minister also observed new technologies related to road safety and data driven hyperlocal based working systems. Road accident prevention, black spot analysis and data based decision systems were discussed in detail with experts.

On this occasion, there was a fruitful dialogue on emerging technologies, engineering innovations and road safety with Professor Venkatesh Balasubramaniam, Head of the Road Safety Division of IIT Madras and Professor Jayakanthan, Head of the Engineering Design Division. Managing Director Building Development Corporation M Sibi Chakraborty, Chief Engineer (Building) Public Works Department and other senior officials were present in the discussion.
