New Delhi. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday demanded a parliamentary debate on air pollution and urged the government to provide adequate funds in the Union Budget to tackle the problem. He read out messages from citizens in a Facebook post and in a video made by himself urged PM Modi to declare air pollution a national health emergency. Rahul Gandhi had earlier demanded a debate on this issue in Parliament in the winter session of 2025.
In the video, Rahul Gandhi said that now the time has come that the government should allow discussion on this issue in Parliament and PM Modi should declare pollution as a national health emergency. We have to come together and make a serious plan…We have to ensure that there is enough money in the budget to deal with this problem. Sharing this post, Rahul Gandhi wrote – In the last few days, I have read messages from thousands of Indians in which they have told how pollution is affecting their lives.
What stood out most was the fear – for children, for parents, for tomorrow – that is being felt by families in cities across India. Pollution is no longer just an environmental issue, it is a national health emergency. Parliament should discuss this. The government must act and this budget must provide real resources for real solutions. Indians are not asking for reports or statements. They are asking for clean air.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the air quality in Delhi remained in the very poor category on Sunday morning, with AQI 318 recorded at around 8 am. His comments came amid the ongoing budget session of Parliament, where Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the budget for 2026-27. The budget session will last for 30 meetings over 65 days and will end on April 2. Both the Houses will adjourn for vacation on February 13 and will resume session on March 9 so that the standing committees can examine the demands for grants of several ministries and departments.
