Raipur : ‘Aajeevika Dabri’ being built under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGA) is emerging as an effective means of income enhancement for small and marginal farmers of the state. Along with promoting water conservation, this initiative is creating new opportunities for sustainable livelihood in rural areas.

The construction work of livelihood dabri under MNREGA is in progress in the field of small farmer Bihari Lal, resident of Gram Panchayat Mendrakhurd of Surguja district. 95 percent work of this bridge, which is being constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 1 lakh 99 thousand, has been completed. Storing rain water in Dabri will increase the dependence of crops for irrigation and agricultural work will become more smooth.

Bihari Lal said that through Dabri, they will start advanced cultivation of vegetables as well as fish farming, which will significantly increase their income. Expressing his gratitude to Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai and the district administration for this facility, he said that this scheme is proving to be very beneficial for small farmers like him.

With the aim of strengthening water management and promoting rural livelihoods in the district, about 403 livelihood ponds are being constructed by the district administration. Through these dams, rain water conservation will be encouraged, ground water level conservation will be facilitated and irrigation, fisheries and other multi-purpose activities will be promoted. Along with this, concrete steps are being taken towards making the villagers self-reliant by creating employment at the local level.

In this regard, District Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Vinay Kumar Aggarwal said that the priority of Chhattisgarh government is that the benefits of development schemes should reach the last person of the society. Schemes like ‘Aajeevika Dabri’ are strengthening the rural economy and providing a source of sustainable income to the farmers. He said that hundreds of farmers like Bihari Lal of Mendrakhurd are setting a new example of self-reliance by joining the mainstream of development through these efforts.
