Raipur : The problem of drinking water was once the biggest challenge of rural life in Bhotali, a dependent village of Marethanwagaon Gram Panchayat of Dongargaon development block of Rajnandgaon district. During summers, due to falling groundwater level, water could not be obtained even from hand pumps. There were long queues for water and the villagers had to face a lot of difficulties. There was always a risk of diseases due to unclean water.
The effective implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission completely changed the situation of Bhotali. Regular and clean drinking water supply has been ensured by installing solar powered pumps in the village. Now all the families are getting clean drinking water from tap every day. This has not only resulted in a permanent solution to the water crisis, but has also brought about a significant improvement in the standard of living of the villagers. Under Jal Jeevan Mission, five women of the village have been trained to test water with field test kits to monitor the quality. They are checking the quality of water from time to time. Also, to promote community participation, a water committee has been formed, which is responsible for the maintenance of the water supply system.
Availability of clean water has had a positive impact on the health of rural families. The expenditure on diseases caused by contaminated water has reduced and the efficiency of people has increased. Having taps in the house has saved time for women and children, which they are now using for farming and other useful works. Under grey-water management, water conservation and cleanliness are also being promoted by giving information to the villagers about the construction of soak pits.
