Know when is Magh Amavasya
According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Mauni Amavasya will be celebrated on Sunday, January 18 in the year 2026. Amavasya Tithi of Magh month will start at 00:03 AM on 18th January and will continue till 01:21 AM on 19th January. On the basis of Udayatithi, 18th January is considered as the auspicious time of Mauni Amavasya.
Special importance of bathing and donating in Mauni Amavasya
Due to it being Sunday, this time it is being called ‘Ravi Mauni Amavasya’, which is considered a very auspicious coincidence. According to religious beliefs, bathing in holy rivers on the day of Mauni Amavasya destroys all sins. Bathing especially on the banks of Ganga, Yamuna and Sangam has special significance. On this day, devotees from India and abroad come to the Magh Mela organized in Prayagraj and take a dip of faith in the Sangam. It is believed that on this day the water of Ganga becomes like nectar, hence the benefit of bathing and donating increases manifold.

Mauni Amavasya is also considered very important for offering prayers to ancestors. On this day, by offering water to the ancestors and doing ‘Pind Daan’, the souls of the ancestors get peace and their blessings remain on the family. This day is considered especially fruitful for those who have Pitra Dosh in their horoscope.
Time for bathing in Mauni Amavasya
This year, on Mauni Amavasya, Brahma Muhurta will be from 05:27 am to 06:21 am, which is the best time for bathing. Apart from this, the time from 12:10 to 12:53 in the afternoon is also considered auspicious. After bathing, there is a tradition of offering water, red flowers and Akshat to the Sun God from a copper pot, which increases health, respect and self-confidence. The most special aspect of Mauni Amavasya is the fast of silence. Sages, saints and many devotees observe silence on this day. It is believed that remaining silent purifies the mind and speech, provides mental peace and conserves spiritual energy. This is the reason why this date is considered best for introspection, restraint and spiritual practice. Overall, Mauni Amavasya is not only a religious festival but also a festival of spiritual purification and mental balance, which makes a person strong from within.
