Capital Raipur. A serious case of cyber fraud has come to light in Kotwali police station area. The thugs withdrew approximately Rs 5 lakh from the bank account of 63-year-old farmer Ghulam Usman Khan on the pretext of making a senior citizen card and increasing its limit. According to the victim, on the morning of 26 February, a call was received from an unknown number. The caller introduced himself as an official of Senior Citizen Card Head Office, Kolkata and sent an APK file on WhatsApp in the name of completing the process. As soon as the file was opened, after some time a video call was made and he was asked to show his debit card and Aadhar card. After the first hesitation, the fraudster made the excuse of “linking the card to the Senior Citizen Card”, falling prey to which he shared the card information. Another call came in the evening, in which he was lured to increase the limit from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh and another APK file was downloaded. After this, messages of OTP and suspicious links started coming continuously on the mobile. Frightened, the victim switched off the phone, but when it was switched on again, a total of Rs 4,99,751 had been withdrawn from the account in three separate transactions. Police have registered a case and started investigation. Cyber experts say that downloading APK file from any unknown source and showing banking documents on video call is extremely risky. Officials have appealed to people to remain alert and report any such calls immediately.
