Raipur : Beekeeping is proving to be an effective self-employment medium providing high income at low cost along with environmental protection. A remarkable initiative has been taken towards making women self-reliant in village Champa of Bagicha development block. Under the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana, self-help groups were formed and women were motivated and trained for beekeeping.

The women of the group were provided 5 boxes free of cost for beekeeping. At present, during the Rabi season, boxes are being installed near the mustard crop and it is being followed scientifically, due to which there is a possibility of better production. The group produced about 10 kg of honey from 5 boxes in a month, which was sold in the local market at the rate of Rs 500 per kg and earned income. This has infused enthusiasm and confidence among the women of the group. Bees promote biodiversity through pollination and increase the productivity of crops.
