New Delhi. The Special Cell of Delhi Police has issued a notice to Penguin Random House India over the alleged leak of former Army Chief General MM Naravane’s autobiography Four Stars of Destiny before its publication. Through the notice, the Special Cell of Delhi Police has sought answers to many questions and has ordered the representatives of the publishing house to cooperate in the investigation. Earlier, the Special Cell had registered a case in connection with the alleged leaking of former Army Chief General Naravane’s book before its publication.
The notice has been served to Penguin amid the uproar over the alleged leak of the former Army chief’s book describing the events of the Galwan Valley conflict in 2020. Clarifying on the matter, Penguin India said that the announcement of a book or its availability for pre-order should not celebrate publication. The clarification came after Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi cited Naravane’s 2023 social media post in which he had said that his autobiography Four Stars of Destiny was available now.
In a statement titled A Brief Guide on How Book Publishing Works at Penguin Random House India, the publisher said, an announced book, a book available for pre-order and a published book are not the same thing. He clarified that when a book is announced, it only means that the publisher has shared plans to publish this book in the future and that the book is not available for sale right now.
Similarly, pre-order listings for a book are a standard industry practice, allowing readers and retailers to place advance orders before publication. The statement said such listings do not indicate that the book is published or available. The publisher stated that the scheduled publication date reflects a planned release timeline and does not mean that the book is already on the market.
