Mumbai A new dilemma has arisen in the politics of Maharashtra, when the sudden demise of Ajit Pawar has brought forth contradictory claims regarding the possibility of merger of the two factions of NCP. Sharad Pawar indicated that high-level talks were going on with Ajit Pawar regarding the merger, while Devendra Fadnavis and other senior leaders of Ajit Pawar’s faction are completely denying this claim.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis questioned the validity of these claims and said that Ajit Pawar was in constant touch with him, but he never raised the topic of merger. Fadnavis also said that Ajit Pawar’s position in the grand alliance government was strong, and hence the chances of him leaving the party or merging were extremely less.
Senior NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) leaders Praful Patel, Sunil Tatkare and Chhagan Bhujbal also clarified that the decision to join the NDA in 2023 was final and there were no talks with Sharad Pawar on the merger. Tatkare also said that now NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) is part of the NDA, and it is up to Sharad Pawar whether he wants to include his party in the ruling alliance or not.
Sharad Pawar’s statement: closed door talks
Meanwhile, Sharad Pawar responded to these claims by saying that the merger was discussed ‘closed doors’ in which only Ajit Pawar, Jayant Patil, Supriya Sule and Rohit Pawar were involved. He said that people like Devendra Fadnavis and Sunil Tatkare were outside the matter, and hence they did not have any correct information on it. With this, a situation of leadership crisis has arisen in Ajit Pawar led NCP. Praful Patel and other party workers are now trying to install Sunetra Pawar as her late husband’s political successor.
Advice to Parth Pawar to keep a low profile
Sunetra Pawar has been elected the leader of the party’s legislature party and has also taken oath as the Deputy Chief Minister. Sharad Pawar also said that he had no information about this situation, which further deepened the tension between the party and the family. Especially when BJP advised Parth Pawar to maintain a low profile in view of the recent controversies. It was also discussed that NCP is considering sending Parth Pawar to Rajya Sabha, as this seat has become vacant after his mother Sunetra became the Deputy Chief Minister.
At the same time, Parth Pawar and Sharad Pawar were discussing their father’s memorial in a closed room, while their mother Sunetra Pawar was taking oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state. At present, BJP is hesitant about including Sharad Pawar faction in the grand alliance, which is putting brakes on the chances of merger of both the factions.
Future of NCP and complexity of politics
Due to this situation, the future of NCP is now going through a period of uncertainty, as both the factions are struggling for control of power. BJP is influencing the changing political equations of the state behind the scenes, due to which the process of merger of the two factions of NCP has stopped.
