Worship in the mountains is not just a religious ritual, but it is a way of life here. Here every puja is performed with complete tradition, strict rules and deep devotion. There is one thing in Pahari culture, without which no puja or ritual is considered complete and that is ‘Burma’. Even though today’s generation is becoming modern, the importance of Burma in the mountains is still the same as it was centuries ago. Without this, neither the deities are established nor the work of the ancestors is accomplished.

Know what is Kush from which Burma is formed
Burma is also called ‘Kush’ Kusha or at some places Kush. Burma is prepared from a sacred plant (grass). In Hindu religious scriptures, Kusha is considered to be the purest grass. It is believed that Kush has amazing power to absorb negative energy and purify the environment. This is the reason why it is used essentially not only in the worship of Gods but also in Shraddha, Tarpan and ancestral rituals. Without Koosh, the effect of any mantra is not as it should be.
The rule of 108 straws and the power of mantras
The process of making Burma is also very unique in itself and is bound by rules. Exactly 108 straws of Kusha are used to make it. The number 108 has great spiritual significance in Hinduism, that is why the same number of straws are kept in Burma also. These are threaded or joined together in a special way while chanting mantras. This work is often done by the elders of the house or a learned scholar, so that no mistake is made in the method.
Burma is the seat of the gods
Describing this tradition, Pandit Baldev Dutt Bhatt says that it would be wrong to consider Burma as a product made only of Kush. In fact it is considered the ‘seat of the gods’. At the time of puja, the Gods and Goddesses are invoked and given place through Burma. According to Pandit ji, the worship done without Burma remains incomplete and the person does not get its full results. This is an important link between both divine work and ancestral work.
Burma is necessary in every auspicious work
There is hardly any auspicious event in the mountains where Burma is not visible. From small pujas at home to big havans, yagyas and marriage rituals, the presence of Burma is essential. People have an unwavering belief that no auspicious work done without Burma is successful. Because of this belief, this tradition is still alive in every village and every house in the mountains.
Burma is preserved in homes
In the hill houses, people preserve Burma with great respect and care. It is kept at a clean and high place. Whenever any puja takes place in the house, Burma is taken out and installed with rituals. Elders believe that having Burma in the house brings happiness, peace and positive energy. It is not just a bunch of blades of grass, but a symbol of our age-old hill culture and unwavering faith.
