Although Shri Ram received knowledge from many sages in his life, but his two main gurus are considered to be Maharishi Vashishtha and Maharishi Vishwamitra. These two gurus had a special and very important place in the life of Lord Ram…

1. Vice Chancellor Maharishi Vashishtha (Guru of Spirituality and Rajdharma)
Maharishi Vashishtha was the patriarch of the Raghuvansh of Ayodhya. The naming and initial education of King Dasharatha’s four sons Ram, Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughan took place in the ashram of Vashishtha ji.
Education of Veda-Vedang: Vashishtha ji gave deep knowledge of Vedas, Upanishads, politics and scriptures to Shri Ram.

Yoga Vashishtha: When in his youth, renunciation arose in the mind of Shri Ram and he was worried about the mortality of the world, the advice given to him by Guru Vashishtha is today famous by the name of ‘Yoga Vashishtha’. This book is considered to be the highest peak of spirituality.

Rajdharma: He taught Ram about the duties of an ideal king (Ramrajya).

2. Maharishi Vishwamitra (Guru of weapons and karma)
Maharishi Vishwamitra came into the life of Shri Ram when he needed a warrior to protect his insecurities and his yagyas.
Knowledge of divine weapons: Vishwamitra took Ram and Lakshman with him to the forest. There he taught Rama the knowledge of ‘Bala’ and ‘Atibala’, due to which he never felt tired or hungry or thirsty. He provided many divine and destructive weapons to Ram.
Killing of Tadka and Subahu: Under the guidance of Vishwamitra, Shri Ram demonstrated his first fighting skills and killed demons like Tadka and Subahu.
Ahilya Uddhar and Sita Swayamvar: It was Maharishi Vishwamitra who took Ram to Janakpur, where Ram broke Shiva’s bow on his orders and married Mother Sita.

Shri Ram always showed immense devotion towards his gurus. Be it serving the feet of Vashishtha ji or going to the forest on the orders of Vishwamitra, Ram proved that a great disciple is the one who considers the Guru’s orders supreme.
Other gurus and guides
Even during his exile, Shri Ram received guidance from many sages-
Maharishi Bhardwaj: Who advised him to reside in Chitrakoot.
Maharishi Agastya: Who gave the knowledge of ‘Amogh Astra’ and ‘Aditya Hridaya Stotra’ to Ram to kill Ravana.
