Haridwar: Only some time is left in the Shardiya Kavad Yatra starting from Haridwar. Shiva devotees from different states of the country come to Haridwar and leave for their destination carrying Ganga water on their shoulders. Kavad Yatra undertaken for the sake of Lord Shiva is equivalent to walking on the edge of a sword. We are saying this because if Kavad Yatra is not performed as per rules then it gives adverse results and one may have to face the wrath of Mahadev.
Kavad Yatra is a moving temple. Shardiya Kavad Yatra starts from Pratipada of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month, the rules of carrying it on shoulders are explained in religious texts like Shiva Mahapuran, Skanda Puran etc. Let us understand the rules of lifting Kavad in detail…
What are the rules for lifting Kavad?
Giving more information about the rules of Kavad Yatra, Pandit Shridhar Shastri says that the rules of lifting Kavad have been mentioned in many texts like Shiv Purana and Skanda Purana. Before starting the Kavad Yatra, take bath in the holy river Ganga etc. and wear clean clothes. While taking bath, keep chanting Bholenath’s mantras like “Om Namah Shivay” or other mantras in your mind. He tells that before lifting the Kavad, worship the holy Mother Ganga and resolve to undertake the journey with holy Ganga water in hand. If Kavad Yatra is undertaken without any resolution, it does not yield any results.
Why does Kanvad get fragmented?
While traveling in the Kavad Yatra, do not carry the Kavad from one shoulder to the other over the head. By doing this the journey is considered broken. Also, Kavad should not be kept on the ground. Due to this also the Kavad gets fragmented. If you want to keep the Kavad from one shoulder to the other, then keep it facing forward. Also, if you want to keep the Kavad, then keep it at a clean and high place i.e. on a stand, tree etc., this way the Kavad does not get broken and you get the full benefit of the journey.
what to avoid
He says that Kavad is as sacred as the gods. While undertaking the Kavad Yatra, one should keep the mind focused only on purity and Bholenath. Abuse and abusive words should not come out of your mouth. By doing this your journey remains incomplete. He further explains that during the journey, follow celibacy and avoid consumption of alcohol, beedi, cigarette, tobacco, cannabis or other intoxicants. By doing this the devotees incur millions of sins which do not go away even in many births. The full benefits of the journey are achieved only by completely avoiding intoxicants, meat, alcohol etc. during this yatra.
