Chandigarh. The administration has taken strict action after the mutilated bodies of about 50 cows were found in the animal remains disposal center of Makhan Majra area in Chandigarh. Chief Secretary H. Rajesh Prasad ordered to implement 24×7 CCTV surveillance in all cow sheds and ensure regular reviews. Postmortem and detailed investigation have been ordered, the report of which is likely to come in a week. The police registered a case against unknown people in the police station under Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. In the complaint of Makhan Majra Cowshala Management Committee, it was said that due to lack of adequate fodder, water, shelter and medical facilities for the cows, many animals were found dead. During inspection on January 13, 50-60 dead cows were found and no veterinary facility was available at the time of inspection.
The Chief Secretary inspected the cowsheds of Raipur Kalan, Industrial Area and Makhan Majra and reviewed the arrangements related to the care, hygiene and welfare of cows and animals. He directed to ensure proper accommodation, regular food and drinking water in every cow shelter. Ordered to immediately repair the technical fault of the incinerator. Complete information and duty roster of staff and veterinarians was asked to be displayed at a prominent place. BJP leader Sanjay Tandon described the incident as “shocking and unacceptable” and demanded strict action against the culprits. Cow protection groups also protested by placing the carcass of a dead calf on the road and warned against cow slaughter and animal trafficking.
