Amidst the election excitement in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission (EC). During the press conference in Mumbai, Uddhav Thackeray alleged that now not democracy but ‘mobocracy’ is going on in the country, where along with theft of votes, ‘theft’ of candidates has also started.

‘Now theft of candidates…’

Taking aim at the BJP alliance, former CM Uddhav Thackeray said, “We caught them red-handed stealing votes, but now they have started stealing the candidates themselves. This is the biggest threat to democracy.”

Thackeray was referring to the ruling party’s efforts to bring opposition candidates into its fold. In fact, even before the voting in 29 municipal corporations of Maharashtra, the ruling Mahayuti alliance has won 68 seats. On the last day of withdrawal of nominations, BJP candidates were elected without opposition on 44 seats, while Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena also won on 22 seats and Ajit Pawar-led NCP on two seats.

Taunted on PM Modi

Taking a dig at PM Modi, Uddhav Thackeray said, “Don’t compare PM Modi with us. He built Mount Kailash, he brought Ganga to earth and was also involved in the churning of the ocean! But we are still waiting for the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which Modi ji had worshiped in the Arabian Sea years ago.”
