Naxal Surrender Odisha : Under this, the Odisha government has got a major and decisive success in the anti-Naxal campaign. A total of 22 Naxalites surrendered in Malkangiri district on Tuesday. These Naxalites surrendered before Odisha DGP Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, which the security agencies are considering as a big blow to the Naxal organization.
Most of the Naxalites who surrendered were associated with the Keralapal Area Committee. These also include many commander level Naxalites of Dornapal LOS, who had been a challenge to the security forces for a long time. According to senior officials, the surrender of these Naxalites is an important step towards weakening the Naxal network.
The surrendered Naxalites have also handed over a large quantity of arms and ammunition to the security forces. These include a total of 9 weapons including 1 AK-47, 2 INSAS rifles, 1 SLR, a large quantity of cartridges and other Naxalite material. Among those who surrendered are 19 Naxalites belonging to Keralapal, Jagargunda Area Committee and Platoon-26, while 3 Naxalites of Andhra Pradesh-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee are also included.
It is noteworthy that Malkangiri district is adjacent to Sukma district of Chhattisgarh and has been considered a stronghold of Naxal activities for a long time. This is the first mass Naxalite surrender of this year in Odisha, which has boosted the morale of the security forces.
A total of nine districts of Odisha—Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Balangir, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Rayagada and Boudh—are considered Naxal-affected.
