BhopalDue to road construction works in the state not getting timely approval from the Forest Department, 48 projects remained stuck for a long period. This has been revealed in the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General. The report cited lack of planning and departmental coordination as the main reason for the delay. A review conducted in 16 divisions between May 2023 and June 2024 found that due to delays in permission from the forest department, land disputes, encroachment and utility shifting, 48 road projects took additional time ranging from 117 to 1838 days to complete. In many cases, work was started without prior approval, which later led to procedural hurdles.
Cost increased, effectiveness also decreased
The report clearly states that due to delays, not only the cost of the projects increased, but their effectiveness was also affected. Under Madhya Pradesh Construction Department Rules and Forest (Conservation) Act 1980, prior permission from the Central Government is mandatory for diversion of forest land. Despite this, starting the work without ensuring necessary approvals is considered a serious administrative mistake.
Government assured of corrective steps
In the Bhopal Municipal Corporation conference (June 2025), the government admitted that the jurisdiction was not clear between the Revenue and Forest Departments and assured to take corrective steps after investigation. The report emphasizes the need for strict compliance and better coordination to avoid such situations in future.
